Monday Musings: Changing Seasons

If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you know that I love fall. September, October, and November hold a special place in my heart. It’s not just because of the changing of the leaves, the chance to wear warmer clothes and/or consume all things pumpkin related. It’s also because I feel a noticeable shift in the atmosphere. It is the fourth quarter and the end of the year is approaching. It is a season of thankfulness leading into a season of celebration. Change is all around us in the Fall.

When the seasons change in our lives, there is also a shift. If you are self-aware you will notice the internal shift. This can manifest as anxiety, sleepless nights, a renewed sense of urgency, or just an internal “knowing” that something is about to happen. When I sense a season change approaching I go through a process.

My Process

  1. Inquiry – God, what’s going on? Oh, change is coming.

  2. Preparation – Well, I need to get prepared. Insert lots of list-making, sleepless nights, dotting i’s and crossing t’s. (i.e. STRIVING FOR PERFECTION.)

  3. Seeking direction – God, I guess I should have asked you this first. What should I do to prepare for this new season? How do I reduce my anxiety around this new season?

  4. Acceptance – It’s going to happen whether I’m perfectly prepared or not – so I guess I’ll trust God and be at peace about the upcoming changes.

Just like nature’s changing seasons, the seasons in our life are inevitable and purposeful. The season you’re in right now WILL change. Take comfort in that if it’s a difficult one and prepare your heart if you are too comfortable. Faithfully, Fall prunes and Winter hibernates, Spring replenishes and Summer blooms. Likewise, there is a purpose for and in your changing season. This week, be at peace in whatever season you find yourself in or approaching.
