What’s Coming is Greater than What’s Been

Once again we embark on another holiday season. Coincidentally, I, along with many of my family and friends, am in a season of transition. We are standing at the precipice of change. We are searching for new jobs, new directions, waiting for news of a promotion, or coming to the end of a sabbatical. Not knowing what comes next can be a highly uncomfortable and downright scary place to be in. Years ago, God’s people found themselves in a similar situation. They knew the promised Messiah was coming. They just didn’t know WHEN.

Advent is a season observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas and the return of Jesus at the Second Coming. The term “Advent” simply means “Coming”.

Advent is not just a reminder of Christ’s birth or just a time of waiting for his return. It is also a season of hope. Hope in the knowledge that we are called to live in the tension and celebrate a threefold Advent: Christ has come, Christ is with us in Spirit, and Christ will come again.

The fear of the unknown does not have the power to drown out the hope that is within us. Whatever lies before you will not take God by surprise. The sovereign God has ordered your steps. Just as the Children of Israel waited with deep-seated anticipations for the promised Messiah, You and I long for manifested purpose and destiny. As you face change and listen for the voice of God to direct you, be assured my brothers and sisters that God hears our cries and as you wait on what’s “Coming” know that whatever it is – it will surely be greater than what’s “Been”.
